"Who despises the day of small things?" Zechariah 4:10

Doesn't everybody despise the day of small things? 25 years ago when I graduated from Long Island Bible Institute it seemed to me the day of small things was almost over. Surely God had a door he was ready to open that would lift me out of that small place of being a student. A few years later, I found myself in boot camp and again I anxiously waited for the end of training. When I finally got to my first ship I discovered the day of small things began again as the new guy suffers doing jobs everyone else is tired of doing.

This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD: "Go down to the potter's house, and there I will give you my message.
Jeremiah 18:1-2

Five times in Jeremiah's book this phrase is used "This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD". This is the only time the word was a direction to go somewhere else in order to get another message. On the other occasions we are not told when or where God spoke to the message to the prophet. So this is an interesting passage of scripture.

"Now it came about in the thirtieth year, on the fifth day of the fourth month, while I was by the river Chebar among the exiles, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God." Ezekiel 1:1

2,600 years ago the armies of Babylon marched through Israel. They took captive and deported the skilled laborers, the priests and the king of Judah. The deportations came in waves. First in 605 BC, a group including a young man named Daniel. Then in 597 BC the Babylonian invaders took the royal family, King Johoiachin (in the messianic line), the best fighting men, the craftsmen and a priest named Ezekiel. Only the poor remained sifting through ruins and burnt fields. Finally in 586 BC the final blow, Jerusalem and the temple were reduced to dust. In the summer of 592 BC Jerusalem still had her walls intact, and the empty temple in her midst. Jeremiah was prophesying while his countrymen falsely accused him of treason.

Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, "So shall your offspring be." Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead-since he was about a hundred years old-and that Sarah's womb was also dead. Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.
Romans 4:18-21

This is the time of year when Christians celebrate the birth of the Christ- Child. The New Testament describes the birth of Christ as a miracle, a virgin conceived, that is not the normal way babies are brought into this world. Roughly 2100 hundred years before Christ, there was another “unusual” birth - the birth of Isaac.

Isaac’s birth was “unusual” but not miraculous or supernatural. In that all the natural elements of conception had to be in play for Isaac to be Abraham’s and Sarah’s son. Jesus’ father was God, not Joseph. The natural process of conception was suspended and a supernatural process replaced it, just this one time.

The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Mark 1:1

Mark points to a "begining of the gospel", not a begining of Jesus, but a begining of His message. Where did the message of Jesus come from? People were asking, and still do. What is the source of gospel? What is its foundation?  The next verse tells us something about it:

It is written in Isaiah the prophet.

The gospel of Jesus finds its starting point, its begining in what was WRITTEN by Isaiah. The gospel can never be divorced from the written word. So what was written in Isaiah? What was this starting point?
