"Who despises the day of small things?" Zechariah 4:10

Doesn't everybody despise the day of small things? 25 years ago when I graduated from Long Island Bible Institute it seemed to me the day of small things was almost over. Surely God had a door he was ready to open that would lift me out of that small place of being a student. A few years later, I found myself in boot camp and again I anxiously waited for the end of training. When I finally got to my first ship I discovered the day of small things began again as the new guy suffers doing jobs everyone else is tired of doing.

So it goes through life, we train and prepare for futures that never live up to our expectation. We worry and fret over problems in the moment that in the future we look back on with fondness. No matter who you are or what you are doing with confidence it can be said that the place you find yourself today is uncomfortably small. You are waiting on God to reveal his purpose. You have not quite reached the place that you believe God has prepared for you.

If we despise the day of small things we will find it difficult to find contentment with God in this life. God is so amazingly small. His sense of detail is infinite. Look at the spectrum of colors we see, sounds with hear, tastes on our tongue, and things we can feel. He has made a world flooded with infinite, small details. A tiny, almost invisible, seed produces a huge head of lettuce. Tiny atoms can be split releasing enough energy to destroy a city. Something as small as a virus, can kill a human being.

Fleeting moments pass like a summer's breeze but taken together they become the sum of our life. Expect God too do great things, but don't lose sight of the small things he brings each and every passing day.

"But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel..." Micah 5:2

Size is no measure of significance.
