Starting Over: Moses Print E-mail
Friday, 20 November 2009 18:06
By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh's daughter. He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a short time. He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward. By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king's anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible. Hebrews 11:24-28

Moses lost more than most of us ever had when he left Egypt. He was second in command of a nation. Most people have never been a national leader. The writer of Hebrews does not say that Moses achieved his notable status and access to wealth "by faith"; rather, "by faith" Moses did quite the opposite. Look at what Moses did with his faith. Look at the verbs in this passage. He refused political position. He chose mistreatment. He regarded "disgrace for the sake of Christ as having greater value than the treasures of Egypt." He looked forward to a reward that Egypt could not offer. Finally,"by faith", He left Egypt altogether.

When God Casts His Cares on us Print E-mail

"to obey is better than sacrifice." 1 Samuel 15:22

For king Saul these words marked the beginning of his end. King Saul had become more connected to people than to God. Sure he believed in God; yes, he knew how to sacrifice to God; he prayed; But the result was he trembled and then he fell apart in total panic.

Saul is all of us apart from an active connection to the living God. Saul is all of us who have ever felt like "I have to do something or else.... ". The reality for anyone who walks with God is that we should never act from compulsion. No one should be able to force us into action except for God. The source of Saul's distress, and his solution to it were worldly, temporal, and disconnected from God.

"Who despises the day of small things?" Zechariah 4:10

Doesn't everybody despise the day of small things? 25 years ago when I graduated from Long Island Bible Institute it seemed to me the day of small things was almost over. Surely God had a door he was ready to open that would lift me out of that small place of being a student. A few years later, I found myself in boot camp and again I anxiously waited for the end of training. When I finally got to my first ship I discovered the day of small things began again as the new guy suffers doing jobs everyone else is tired of doing.
